Will They Grow in the Desert?
Why can you grow tropicals in the desert?
Because Arizona is warm most of the year. Water is usually the missing ingredient.
Tropical does not always mean jungle or rainforest. It refers to warmer regions
of the world with lots of sunshine. While you cannot grow everything here, you can
grow a lot more than most people think.

Isn't it too hot?
Not always. Many tropical fruit trees are grown in climates similar to ours.
If anything, cold is often the greater threat to tropical trees.
Where can I see tropical trees growing in Phoenix?
Almost everywhere. Tropical does not always mean jungle plant. It means warm-climate plant.
Bougainvillea, queen palms, hibiscus, lantana, bird of paradise, and ficus are all examples
of tropical or subtropical plants commonly seen around Arizona.
Can you really grow an avocado in Arizona?
Avocados are one of the hardest trees we sell, and we do not hide that. With the right
advice, the right placement, and a quality tree, it is possible to grow an avocado here.
If mangos and guavas grow here, why don't I see them around?
First, many people would not recognize them if they saw them. Mangos and guavas can look
similar to ordinary landscape trees. Also, most fruit trees are planted in backyards, so
you may not see them from the street.
Are there common fruits that grow here?
Yes. Apples, peaches, plums, apricots, pomegranates, figs, grapes, and many others can grow
here. We carry many of them too.
Nothing grows in the desert, right?
Phoenix is in the Sonoran Desert, one of the most plant-diverse deserts in the world.
Arizona has a long agricultural history and commercially grows everything from apples
to zucchini.

I have a black thumb. Are there fruit trees I can grow?
Yes. Pomegranate, fig, grapes, and jujube are some of the simplest. Want something more
tropical? Guava, sugarcane, papaya, mango, and citrus are also possible with a little more care.
I am an experienced gardener and want something more exotic. Can you help?
Yes. We carry many unique trees such as star fruit, dragon fruit, cherimoya, atemoya,
jackfruit, and much more. This is our specialty. It is what we know and what we do best.
