The Canton Billiard League, formally known as “The Canton Timken League”, was founded in 1977 by Dick Eubanks. He originally created this league for his co-workers at Timken Company. Games were played on AMF tables at the Hall of Fame Lanes. It featured straight pool to 25 innings or 100, whichever occurred first. A few years later he opened the league to all players and its name was changed to the Canton Billiard League. The Canton Billiard League has been known to run leagues primarily and not tournaments, but they have gad a nine-ball tournament in 1982 at Hall of Fame Lanes and a few straight pool tournaments over the years.
The league has been managed by Dick Moecia since 1986. It moved to Starcher Billiards, then Club Cue and finally Academy Billiards in downtown Canton before Fiddlestix in 1989. All the top players in Stark County have played in the Canton Billiard League. While the Canton Billiard League has focused its play on Nineball and Straight Pool in the past, it now offers One Pocket, Bank Pool and Eightball on the small tables as well. The Canton Billiard League does not offer team play. All games are one-on-one competition. While we encourage everyone to play on league night, sometimes work, vacations, family commitments, etc. cause conflicts so our flexible schedule allows players to pre-play or make-up games. We are very proud of our league. Afterall, it was the first pool league ever to form in Stark County and now is the area’s longest running league in the area.Dick was the first in the area to “computerize” scoring. A MS-Dos program written by him in the 80’s was voted best computer program by Enable Software in 1993. The league was also the first to offer statistics on the web beginning in 1986. Currently, Dick is training various league members how to manage the league. He knows his days are numbered and he wants the league to continue after he is no longer able to manage it.
